Newsletter 15

January 8th, 2010

Dear Parents,

NEWSLETTER 15

I am so pleased that we have been able to keep the school open during this icy weather and we must all be very thankful that all our staff have made considerable efforts to get to school this week. Particular thanks to Mrs. Jalali who has been battling with the snow in North London and Miss Smith who has, miraculously, been able to get in from Hertfordshire!

However, this afternoon has proven just an icicle too far – the playground now resembles an ice rink and several children have already fallen. I was also concerned about the state of the pavements which has resulted in several members of staff falling – including me!!

This has resulted in my making the difficult decision to close the school this afternoon. Thank you to you all for being so understanding and for collecting your children earlier than 3:30 p.m. As a result of the early closure, this Newsletter will not include Stars of the Week!

New Year’s Resolutions and a New SEAL Theme
We have already had a discussion about how many people have already broken their New Year’s Resolution – I have still maintained my pledge not to eat any Mars Bars and with a one in my office at the moment, temptation is at every turn!

This term’s SEAL theme will be Going for Goals and children will be asked to think of goals that they can realistically aim for. I have also asked them to think over the weekend of a goal that they could set for me – please be gentle!

Christianity Day
This year’s Christianity Day will take place on Thursday 14th January. The theme will be Journeys in the Bible. If you would like to be involved, please let either Miss Hanlon or myself know.

Quiz Night – Friday 29th January
I hope that you all received your PTA letter about the Quiz Night which will be held on 29th January. This is such a fun evening and we do try not to get too competitive – it is well worth putting this date in your diary. Mr. and Mrs. Garwood-Watkins, Miss Fiske and Miss Capell are busily working on some fiendishly difficult questions so book tickets for your team as soon as possible. Tickets are £7 per person or £35 per team of 6.

Maths Week – February 1st-5th
We are all very excited about this year’s Maths Week as Miss Anstey has prepared lots of really exciting activities based around money. There will be much more news over the next few weeks but I wanted to ask if there were any parents working in the banking industry or with money in particular who would like to speak to the children about money?! We will also be asking PTA Class Reps to help during the actual week – so please keep an eye out for requests coming soon.

Cooking Theme for this Term
The theme for this term is Tasty Tomato pasta sauce – yum, yum! All of the ingredients will be supplied but if your child would like to add vegetarian toppings (cheese, olives, mushrooms, etc.), they can bring these in. Please do not send in any meat.

Each class will be sent home information before they start their cooking week and children will also need to bring in a Tupperware type container to bring home their sauce for you all to try.

Sports News from Coach Michael
We have been invited to send a team of sporty Year Five and Six children to the Westminster Sportshall Athletics Competition on 27th January. He will be looking closely at these classes over the next two weeks in order to select a team. Effort, effort, effort required!!

Nits AGAIN!!!
I know that it is boring but, yet again, I have to report that several classes have infestations of nits. It is essential that everyone checks their child’s hair on a very regular basis to ensure that we can at least attempt to keep these pesky creatures at bay. Please help us to help everyone!

Teacher Angel and Buster
Teacher Angel this week is Mrs. Pearman who has moved “upstairs” to join Year Four as their new TA – lucky people! Mrs. Pearman is always on hand to help people especially with their reading. Buster will be going home with Maya Eidemak in Reception as she has already set her goal for this term and intends to learn to swim without armbands. In addition to this, she is also a great member of her class and a wonderful role model to us all.

Text Messages to Parents
The Group Call system that we have to help us contact parents is a marvel. However, it does depend on everyone making sure that we have up to date mobile phone contact numbers. If you are not sure that you have given these to us, please pop into the office to check. Thank you to Year Six for being excellent helpers today with bringing children to their parents this afternoon.

I hope that the weather improves and that we are not set for another cold session next week. We will text you if there are any developments so please keep your mobile on and close by.

With all best wishes,
