Newsletter 9
November 13th, 2009
Dear Parents,
NEWSLETTER 9
Our theme for this week has been Remembrance and it has been entirely humbling to see how involved the children have been in the various activities we have introduced. The Remembrance Service on Monday was, as usual, very though provoking and it was great to see so many children and adults wearing their poppies.
This week’s Big Writing was dedicated to the theme of Remembrance and children have used special A4 sized postcards to write out their work before sending them to a Veteran via The British Legion. I would like to include this piece of writing by Chikezie Nwosu as we all felt it was very moving and especially poignant from a Year Two pupil:
“Dear Veteran, I am writing to you because you saved our country. I am writing to you to thank you for saving our lives. I think you are very, very brave. I will remember you by wearing poppies. I know about the poppies because their colour is red, black and green. All the soldiers in WWI died in a battlefield and afterwards poppies grew in the grass. I would always wear a poppy. Do you wear a poppy? Do you have lots of medals? When I go to church, I close my eyes to remember you. I also have two minutes silence.” I say no more.
Special Non-Uniform Day – Thursday 19th November
Our first ever “Bring a Bottle” non-uniform day will take place next Thursday 19th. Please bring a bottle of alcohol for us to place on our Christmas Bottle Tombola at the Christmas Fair. I apologise for any mix up about the date and especially to Akira Nixon-Anderson for yesterday!
Christmas Bazaar News
There is not long to go now so please work hard with your Class Reps. to make, collect or buy items for your class stall. Making activities can go on at any time (subject to making sure it is alright with your class teacher!) and should either be done in classrooms or in spaces agreed with staff. Please do not use the Home Corner as this is to be kept tidy for cooking activities.
Request from Year Three Reps: We need lots of Christmassy things for Santa’s Grotto! If you have anything like: artificial Xmas trees, wrapped empty boxes, candy canes, Xmas lights, large decorations, anything that looks like snow or is sparkly or Xmas materials for hanging and decorating. Please contact Kate Cade on 0798 4432133 or Georgia Albright on 0784 3200149 if you can donate or lend.
Please don’t forget to bring in small new items that can include in the Lucky Jars stall – the more we make, the more money we can raise!
It is Anti-Bullying Week next week with an emphasis on E-Safety. The catch phrase for the week is “Be safe in E-Space”.
Film Club News
Miss Anstey is very pleased at the way The Film Club is going and is now able to offer this to all of KS2 every week! However, there has been quite a bit of confusion each week with parents coming to collect their children only to find that they are in Film Club or vice versa. Children are very welcome to come along but please make sure they and you know if they are going to stay each week.
Up and coming films are: 13th November: The Railway Children, 20th November: Krikou and The Sorceress, 27th November: Pixar short films. Enjoy!
Christmas Lunch Has Been Booked!
We have booked our school Christmas Lunch for Thursday 10th December. The cost will be £1.70. If your child already has a school lunch, you do not have to do anything. If your child normally has a packed lunch but would like to have the special Christmas Lunch, please send in the £1.70 in a sealed envelope with your child’s name clearly on it.
St. Saviour’s Intrepid Mountaineers – Great Success News!
Well done to St. Saviour’s parents for completing the mammoth task of successfully climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro over the last week. We are all so proud of you! If you were thinking of sponsoring these wonderful parents who risked life and limb to raise money for our church, please send cash or cheque to Mr. Garwood-Watkins either personally or through the School Office. A very worthy cause and a terrific effort! I am just breathless thinking about it!!
Lateness and Appointments During School Time
If it is necessary for your child to have a doctor’s or dentist’s appointment during school time, please send a letter in before hand to let us know. When you bring your child back into school, please go to the School Office to let Mrs. Otero know that they have arrived.
From Monday, there will be some changes to the administration of the Late Book. When a child arrives after the gate is closed, we will be recording the number of minutes that they are late. These will then be added together over the year.
Buster and The Teacher Angel
Buster is going home with Luca Cooke today for being such a thoughtful and kind person. His manners are amazing and he is always thinking of others. He gave his seat up to someone on the tube during a trip last week and offered his coat to Mrs. El-Sahn when she said she was cold! Teacher Angel goes to Miss MacDonald as “even though she has not been here for long, she is doing a good job and is offering a really exciting after school club” (the voice of School Council!).
Geographer of the Week
This week’s Geographer of the Week is Adam Rodgers who knew so much about Hungary and showed some amazing items to his class. Did you know that the Rubik cube was invented in Hungary (thank you Luca Holloway for this) and that the ballpoint pen was as well! Adam chose Argentina for us to study next week.
